Somaliland, located in the northwest of Somalia (the Horn of Africa), was once ruled by Britain. In 1991, during a civil war in what was then Somalia, the former British Territory seceded from Somalia and declared the establishment of the Republic of Somaliland. The country is roughly located between Ethiopia, Djibouti and the Gulf of Aden, with an area of 137600 square kilometers, and the capital of Somaliland its Hargeisa. In recent years, the government of Somaliland has actively engaged in attracting investment and seeking investment from the international community in the hope of creating jobs for young people and lifting more people out of poverty. In order to change the status quo, the Somaliland government has been building infrastructure everywhere to increase employment opportunities. The local power source mainly relies on diesel generators, so power cuts have become commonplace. And electricity is also the most expensive in the world, four times that of China. While Somaliland still has many of the problems that developing countries have to deal with, its youthful demographics and pivotal location in the Horn of Africa make this new country a fluid place with endless possibilities.
